Srinagar, Dec 15 (KNO): With the recent approval of Rs 998 crore master plan, Central University of Kashmir is gearing up for a complete transformation, with project to consolidate varsity campuses at Tulmulla, providing relief from years of scattered operations.
According to the details available with the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) the long-awaited project is set to be completed within the next three years, marking the beginning of a new-era in J&K’s higher education sector.
The varsity officials told KNO that the mega infrastructure project is designed to end the split-campus system under which different departments of the university have been functioning from multiple rented locations since its establishment in 2009.
Registrar Dr. Nisar Ahmad Mir said that the university has already initiated the tendering process for academic and residential infrastructure. Land grading activities are in progress and construction of major blocks is expected to begin shortly.
“We plan to shift the Science campus from Nuner to Tulmulla on newly 30,000 square meter facility by the next academic session,” Dr. Mir told KNO. “Once the first phase is operational, we will gradually move other departments as per the master plan. Our goal is to ensure all facilities are accessible within one vibrant campus ecosystem.”
Out of the total 998.62 crore sanctioned funds, Rs 400 crore have been earmarked exclusively for infrastructure development during 2025–28. The campus will include academic blocks, hostels, central facilities, recreation zones, sports infrastructure and administrative complexes — all designed with sustainability and digital integration at the core.
“This is more than an infrastructure project; it’s the realization of a shared dream,” Vice-Chancellor Prof. A Ravinder Nath earlier said.
“The Tulmulla campus will not only unify operations but also provide modern learning, research, and residential spaces that reflect the vision of NEP-2020. It’s a transformative step for the entire Valley, Prof Nath said.
Meanwhile, the Project Manager reported that work on the Science Block is progressing steadily, with 75% of the ground-plus-one structure completed, while the second-level construction is now underway.
“We faced a few technical challenges due to the marshy terrain, but our engineering teams overcame them efficiently", he said, adding that the work is expected to be completed within a year depending on weather conditions.
It is noteworthy that the university currently operates from four makeshift campuses in Ganderbal district, having shifted completely from its initial Srinagar locations, with Green Campus at Duderhama, Science Campus at Nunar, Science and Arts Campus at the old hospital building and the developing Main Campus at Tulmulla.
